Description

Sociedad Química y Minera de Chile S.A. (SQM) specializes in the production and global distribution of a diverse range of items, including advanced plant nutrients, various iodine and lithium derivatives, potassium chloride, potassium sulfate, and a selection of industrial chemicals. Its specialized plant nutrition offerings feature compounds like potassium nitrate, sodium nitrate, sodium potassium nitrate, custom fertilizer blends, and other high-performance fertilizers. Iodine and its compounds are supplied for a broad spectrum of uses across medical, pharmaceutical, agricultural, and industrial fields; these applications encompass x-ray contrast media, polarizing films for LCD and LED screens, antiseptics, biocides, disinfectants, pharmaceutical synthesis, electronic components, pigments, and dye constituents. SQM's lithium carbonates are essential for numerous applications, such as electrochemical materials for batteries, frits used in the ceramic and enamel sectors, heat-resistant glass, chemicals for air conditioning, continuous casting powders for steel extrusion, the primary aluminum smelting process, pharmaceuticals, and as an ingredient in gunpowder production. Additionally, the company furnishes lithium hydroxide, crucial for the lubricating greases industry and as a key material for battery cathodes. Potassium chloride and potassium sulfate are provided to support the cultivation of various crops, including corn, rice, sugar, soybeans, and wheat. The industrial chemical portfolio includes sodium nitrate, potassium nitrate, potassium chloride, and solar salts, along with other fertilizer types and blended products. Established in 1960 and headquartered in Santiago, Chile, SQM maintains operations and distribution networks spanning Chile, the broader Latin America and Caribbean region, Europe, North America, Asia, and other international markets.
