As a component of the Vanguard Target Maturity Corporate Bond series, VBCE distinguishes itself by functioning more like a standalone bond than a conventional bond fund. Rather than offering continuous exposure to a segment of the US corporate investment-grade bond market, this fund provides a specific, "bullet" maturity date of December 15, 2031. As this target date approaches, the fund's remaining maturity, duration, and yield-to-maturity will gradually diminish. On its predetermined expiration date, VBCE will liquidate, distributing all capital back to its investors. This particular design makes it an excellent tool for constructing bond ladders.
